Vikings Fall to Gonzaga, No.10 Washington on Opening Weekend

SPOKANE, Wash.
– The Vikings dropped a pair of matches to close out the opening weekend of the 2015 season. Portland State took the first set against Gonzaga before dropping the next three to lose in four. The Vikings then fell in straight sets to No. 10 Washington in their second match of the day.
 
Junior transfer OH Pati Anae led the way for the Vikings against Gonzaga posting her first double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, both team highs.
 
Gonzaga jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in Portland State's opening match of the day. The Bulldogs went up 8-3 before a 4-0 run by the Vikings cut the lead to one at 8-7. The teams traded points before a block from freshmen Katy Wilson and Sarah Brennan tied the set at 9-9.
 
The Bulldogs went up by two at 13-11 but three straight points by the Vikings gave them the lead at 14-13. With the score tied at 18-18 later in the set, a kill by Brennan another PSU block and a kill by Eva Linden put the Vikings up 21-18 and forced Gonzaga to call a timeout.
 
The teams traded points again but the Vikings' sixth block of the match gave them set point. Linden capped off the first set win with a kill giving the Vikings the 25-22 win.
 
Gonzaga countered with a win in the second set to tie the match. The Bulldogs got out to an 11-5 lead before the Vikings cut the lead to five at 15-10. Gonzaga ended the set on a 10-3 run to win 25-13.
 
The third set remained close through the first half. Gonzaga held a 14-13 lead but extended its lead and finished out the third on another run to win 25-17 and go up 2-1 in the match.
 
The Vikings switched around its lineup for the fourth set starting seven newcomers (including their libero) in the frame. PSU led 5-3 after a Wilson kill and a Wilson-Linden block. Another block put the Vikings up 10-6, which forced Gonzaga to call a timeout.
 
Portland State went up 12-6 but Gonzaga came back to tie it at 16-16. The Bulldogs took the lead and finished out the fourth set to win 25-19 and take the match.
 
Portland State finished the match with a season-high 13.0 blocks but hit just .148 as a team.
 
The Vikings struggled out of the gate in their second match of the day against No. 10 Washington. With the scored tied 6-6 in the first set, Washington rattled off six-straight points to go up 12-6. The Huskies continued their run throughout the rest of the set winning 25-12.
 
Portland State and Washington remained deadlocked through much of the second set. The Vikings went up 17-15 on a Washington service error but then went cold. Washington scored seven straight points to go up 22-17 before finishing out the set 25-19.
 
The Huskies continued their hot hitting and finished out the match with a 25-13 win in the third set to finish the sweep of the Vikings.
 
Linden led the Vikings with six kills against Washington, while Anae added five.
 
Portland State will open its home slate Wednesday, Sept. 2 when it hosts cross-town rival the University of Portland for a 7 p.m. PT match at the Peter W. Stott Center.
 
NOTES: Pati Anae recorded the first double-double by a Viking this season with 15 kills and 12 digs against Gonzaga … Hadley Heck made her Portland State debut against Washington.
