SPOKANE, Wash. – A pair of newcomers made their marks Friday night but the Vikings dropped their season opener in straight sets to Boise State by scores of 25-10, 28-26, and 25-15.

Jenna Mullen each played well in their first match for the Vikings with nine and eight kills respectively. Anae and Mullen were two of the four newcomers that started for the Vikings. In all, seven Vikings made their Portland State debuts in the match.

Portland State (0-1 overall) led 3-1 early in the first set but a 5-0 run by Boise State (1-0) gave the Broncos a 6-3 lead. Boise State went on another run to go up 15-6 before closing out the first set 25-10.

The Vikings came out in the second set and led 5-4 on a solo block from freshman MB
Katy Wilson, their first block of the match. PSU maintained the lead and went up 11-7 on a Boise State error forcing the Broncos to call a timeout.

Mullen and sophomore MB
Sarah Liva recorded back-to-back kills to put the Vikings up 13-7. PSU went up 16-11 on a Mullen ace before Boise State cut the lead to 16-14. The teams traded points to 18-16. Wilson picked up a kill to go up 20-16.

Boise State took five of the next six points to tie the set at 21-21. Mullen gave the Vikings set-point at 24-23 with a kill but the Broncos tied it up at 24-24. Portland State had three set-points but was unable to finish out the set and fell 28-26 putting Boise State up 2-0 in the match.

After a sluggish first set, the Vikings offense picked it up a bit in the second with Anae posting five kills and Mullen four. They also added a trio of blocks in the set including a pair of solo blocks from Anae and Wilson.

Boise State kept its momentum going after the second set win and went up 4-1 early in the third. Portland State cut the lead to two at 7-5 but the Broncos countered with a run to go up 12-6. After PSU got within three at 17-14, BSU closed out the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-15.

Portland Stat hit just .110 for the match compared to a .425 mark by Boise State. The Vikings tallied 29 digs and five blocks in the match.

The Vikings will play twice on Saturday when they square off with host Gonzaga at 10 a.m. PT followed by a 4 p.m. showdown with No. 10 Washington. Both matches will feature live stats and a live video stream.
