Hornets Sting Vikings Saturday in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif.
– Junior G Emily Easom matched her career high with 27 points but the Portland State women's basketball team fell to the Sacramento State Hornets, 123-77, Saturday afternoon at The Nest in Sacramento, Calif.
 
The game stayed close through the first 15 minutes of the game and the Vikings led by five at 42-37 after a free throw from Danah Haley. After that free throw, Sacramento State finished out the final 4:34 of the first half on a 26-3 run to lead 63-45 at the break.
 
The run did not stop at the half as the Hornets continued their scoring barrage. They opened up the second half on a 17-3 run to go up 80-48. It only got worse as Sacramento State went on a 62-13 run at one point to go up 99-55 midway through the second half.
 
Sacramento State continued to score and took the game by the final score of 123-77. The 123 points scored by the Hornets was the most ever against a Portland State squad. The 61 points in the first half was the most against Portland State in a single half this season.
 
Easom scored her points going 8-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-8 from three-point range. She also went 8-for-9 at the free-throw line. Senior F Mikaela Rivard added 19 points, 15 coming in the first half alone. Rivard went 8-for-13 from the floor with a three-pointer and six rebounds.
 
Sacramento State out-scored Portland State 52-to-20 in the paint and turned 27 PSU turnovers into 50 points.
 
Sacramento State had six players in double-figures including 23 from Adella Randle-El off the bench.
 
The Hornets improved to 13-14 overall and 11-5 in Big Sky play this season while Portland State fell to 3-24 and 1-15.
 
The Vikings will return home next week for their final two games of the season. They will host Northern Arizona on Thursday, March 5 on what will be their "Play For Kay" game to raise awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
 
Saturday, March 7 will be the season finale for the Vikings and it will also be Senior Day. Both games next week will be 7 p.m. starts.
 
NOTES: Emily Easom matched her career high in points with 27 … The 123 points given up is the most all-time by a Portland State team.
