Pullman, WA - The Washington State Cougars were ready to run at Beasley Coliseum on Sunday, and the Portland State Vikings had trouble keeping up. WSU came away with a 91-67 victory over the Vikings.
Josh Hawkinson had 24 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 10-11 shots from the field in leading the Cougars to .532 shooting for the game (33-62). WSU raced out to 14 fast break points, and was strong inside, scoring 38 points in the paint.
Portland State, which shot only 33% in a loss to Portland on Wednesday, opened cold from the field again. The Vikings were only 12-32 in the first half (.375) falling behind by 17. They had scored at least 72 points in every game this season before Sunday but couldn't match the offensive prowess of Washington State.
Hawkinson got the Cougars off to a fast start, hitting his first four shots. WSU took its first lead at 16-13 on a three-pointer by Que Johnson at the 13:52 mark of the first half.
The Cougars broke it open late in the half with an 11-point run, punctuated by a couple of fast break layins by Charles Callison.
Hawkinson finished the half strong, making 8-8 shots for 17 points. When Callison hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer the Cougars led, 47-30.
WSU extended its lead to as many as 32 in the second half on the way to improving its record to 5-1. The loss dropped the Vikings to 3-4 on the season.
Calaen Robinson scored a season-high 19 points while grabbing five rebounds for the Vikings. Isaiah Pineiro added 14 points off the bench.
PSU finished at 41% shooting for the game, making only 2-13 from three-point range. The Cougars out-rebounded the Vikings 40-30.
GAME NOTES: Portland State has never beaten the Cougars (0-8)… PSU is 1-3 on the road this season… the Vikings are off until Saturday when they travel to play Southern Illinois Edwardsville of the Ohio Valley Conference. That game tips off at 2 p.m.
