Portland State senior safety Patrick Onwuasor has become a consensus first team All-American after receiving honors from the Associated Press, STATS Inc., and Walter Camp. Onwuasor, who is also a finalist for the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Year, was an anchor on a Portland State defense that led the Vikings to a 9-3 record and number-five ranking in the nation.
A 6-2, 225-pounder, Onwuasor ranked second in the nation in interceptions with nine. He also had 85 tackles, three tackles for loss and a pass breakup. Onwuasor tied a PSU school record with three interceptions in one game and earned Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Oct. 31.
Onwuasor, a native of Inglewood, CA, has helped lead the turnaround at Portland State, which improved from 3-9 last season to 9-3 this year and earned wins over FBS programs Washington State and North Texas, as well as a 5-1 mark against nationally-ranked teams.
Kameron CanadayKameron Canaday, a senior from Eugene's Sheldon High School, has been a mainstay at the vital and underrated position of long snapper, and earned third team All-America honors from STATS. The 6-4, 240-pounder has been a four-year starter for the Vikings and not coincidently has snapped for All-Americans Zach Brown (K) and Kyle Loomis (P) in the past, as well as All-Conference kicker Jonathan Gonzales the last two seasons.
Since 1998, Portland State players have earned 21 All-American honors by 19 different players. All-America teams will be announced by the Associated Press, the FCS Athletic Directors Association, Walter Camp and the American Football Coaches Association in the coming days.
