Slow Start Dooms Vikings in Loss to 49ers

LONG BEACH, Calif.
– Freshman G Bree Shepard scored 17 points off the bench but the Portland State women's basketball team fell, 89-71, to Long Beach State Sunday afternoon in Long Beach, Calif.
 
A slow start in the first period doomed the Vikings as they trailed 39-21. The 49ers shot 60.9 percent from the floor, including 8-for-10 from three-point range in the first 10 minutes. They added five more for the game, going 13-for-32 from beyond the arc.
 
Portland State made adjustments after the opening period and played even with Long Beach State over the next three periods but the Vikings could not overcome the early deficit and fell by the final score of 89-71.
 
Shepard, from San Diego's Helix HS, went 6-for-12 from the floor against the 49ers. She hit one-of-four three-pointers and went 4-for-5 at the free-throw line for her 17 points.
 
Junior F Danah Haley added 15 points off the bench for her second double-digit scoring game of the young season. She went 4-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-9 at the line. Portland State shot 76.5 percent from the line in the game going 26-for-34 as a team.
 
Sophomore G Cici West added eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds off the bench. Portland State bench players scored 42 of the team's 71 points and accounted for 24 of its 49 rebounds.
 
Freshman G Kian McNair was the only starter in double-figures with 12 points in 24 minutes. She went 3-for-5 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and 4-for-4 from the line.
 
Long Beach State had five players in double-figures, including four of its five starters.
 
Long Beach State improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, while Portland State fell to 0-2 with the loss.
 
Portland State returns home for a three-game home stand beginning Saturday, Nov. 21 against Warner Pacific. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. PT.
