Hornets Sting Vikings in Straight Sets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Portland State Vikings fell in straight sets to the Sacramento State Hornets Saturday night in Sacramento, Calif. The Hornets took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-23, and 25-21.
 
Freshman OH Jenna Mullen led the Vikings with 13 kills and hitting .310 (13-4-29) for the match. She added one of the team's three aces along with four digs and a block. It was her 11th double-digit kill performance of the season and the fifth time she has led the Vikings in kills this season.
 
The first set remained close through the early stages before the Hornets took a two-point lead at 9-7. Sacramento State went on to score seven of the next nine points to go up 16-9. The Hornets extended their advantage late and took the opening frame 25-14.
 
Portland State went up 11-8 midway through the second set before Sacramento State tied it at 13-13. The Vikings once again took the lead and went up by three points at 18-15 but three straight points by the Hornets tied the set at 18-18. The score bounced back and forth before Sacramento State took a two-point lead that it maintained through the rest of the set to take it 25-23 and go up two sets to none.
 
Portland State hit much better in the second set posting a team hitting mark of .256 after hitting below .100 in the opening set. Mullen and freshman MB Katy Wilson each had three kills in the set.
 
The Hornets built a four-point lead at 14-10 in the third stanza. The Vikings pulled to within two points at 20-19 but Sacramento State was too much at home and took the set 25-21 to complete the three-set sweep.
 
Sacramento State improved to 18-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Sky Conference play. Portland State fell to 6-14 and 2-6. The Vikings are now 4-19 all-time against the Hornets in Sacramento.
 
Portland State returns home next week as they welcome the Montana schools. The Vikings host the Montana Grizzlies Thursday, October 22 before hosting the Montana State Bobcats on Saturday, October 24. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m. starts at the Peter W. Stott Center.
