PORTLAND, Ore. – The Vikings kept their Big Sky Tournament hopes alive with a three-set sweep of the Weber State Wildcats Saturday night in Ogden, Utah. The Vikings took the match by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-17.
The Vikings entered the game in a three-way tie for the final two tournament spots with Southern Utah and Eastern Washington. Southern Utah fell in straight sets at Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington fell at Idaho Saturday night. The Vikings' win moves them into seventh in the conference standings and gives them some breathing room in their pursuit of the tournament.
Senior outside hitter
Cheyne Corrado led the Vikings with nine kills in the match. It was the first time since Sept. 19 that the Vikings did not have a player with double-digit kills. Corrado added a pair of service aces and seven digs in the match.
Freshman middle blocker
Sarah Liva had an efficient match posting eight kills on nine attacks with no errors. She also was in on three blocks.
Portland State tallied 10.0 total blocks as a team in the match led by
Katie O'Brien and
Leigh-Ann Haataja's six each. O'Brien added seen kills in the match while Haataja added six.
Portland State led 21-13 late in the first set but allowed Weber State to get back in it with eight-straight points to tie it at 21-21. The Vikings countered with a 4-0 run of their own to take the first set 25-21. O'Brien led the Vikings with five kills in the set.
The second set was tied at 19-19 before a pair of attacking errors by the Wildcats put the Vikings up 21-19. Weber State tired to keep it close but a kill by Haataja and another Wildcat attacking error gave the Vikings the 25-22 win in the second to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Wildcats and Vikings played it close through much of the third set. With the score tied at 13-13, O'Brien broke the tie with a kill to give the Vikings the lead. The teams traded points before the Vikings went on a small run to go up 19-15. The Vikings scored six of the final eight points of the set to take the third 25-17.
The Vikings hit .240 (39-15-100) in the match and held the Wildcats to a .111 mark (35-24-99).
Weber State's Audrey Biggs led all players with 11 kills in the match.
The Vikings will close out the regular season at home next week when they host Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. The match against the Lumberjacks on Saturday, Nov. 15 will be Senior Day.
