PORTLAND
– Veterans led the way as the Vikings took care of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 74-56, Saturday night at the Peter W. Stott Center.

Three returners scored in double-figures for the Vikings led by senior guard Lariel Powell's team-high 19 points. Powell went 8-for-14 from the floor with a three-pointer. Powell led the Vikings with six of their 13 steals in the game.

Senior forward Mikaela Rivard saw her first action of the season after missing the team's first exhibition game due to injury. Rivard scored 12 points for the Vikings with four baskets. She went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She pulled down eight boards.

Junior guard Emily Easom added 13 points in the game including a pair of three-point baskets. Easom went 5-for-6 from the line in the game. The Vikings went 20-for-28 at the line in the game.

Freshman forward Cici West came off the bench for the Vikings and scored 14 points with a game-high 12 rebounds, eight coming on the defensive glass.

Portland State trailed 31-28 at the half and then went down 34-28 early in the second half after a Pioneers three-pointer. Easom countered with her first three-pointer of the game. Yaremi Mejia then stole the ball and got it Easom who fed Powell in the lane for a fast break layup to pull within one at 34-33.

A layup by Ani Avanessian gave the Vikings the lead at 35-34. After Lewis & Clark took the lead back with a layup, Easom hit another three to put the Vikings up two at 38-36. A three-pointer from the Pioneers put them back up one but that did not last long as another layup by Powell gave the Vikings the lead, which they would not give up.

Portland State methodically increased their lead through the rest of regulation winning by a final score of 74-56.

The Vikings shot over 43-percent from the floor in the game and held the Pioneers to under 40-percent from the floor. The Vikings dominated in the paint in the second half outscoring the Pioneers 22-10. They also scored 10 fast break points in the second half.

The Vikings will open the regular season on the road at Seattle U on Sunday Nov. 16. The first home game for the Vikings will be Wednesday, Nov. 19 against South Dakota.
