The Portland State Athletics Marketing Department was honored with a gold medal award for its 2011 Football Commercial at the NACMA Convention today in Dallas, TX.
The NACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators) Board of Directors and Awards Committee presented PSU Athletics Marketing Director Kenny Dow and his staff with gold in the Video Promotion category. The Marketing Staff earned silver in five other categories: Single-Day Attendance Promotion, Student Promotion, Promotional T-Shirt Design, Radio Commercial and Video Board Segment.
Dow, along with his staff, including Hailey Reel, Derek Harguth, Laura Pech, Jordan Greene, Lexi Bishop, Adam Foster, David Douglas Rovianek were recognized for their work. The Marketing Staff also had outside assistance from John Jendritza, Matt Wilcox and Taylor Kavanaugh on some promotions.

• Single-Day Attendance Promotion: Portlandia Night for Men's Basketball
For the Nov. 15 Men's Basketball game against Seattle, PSU promoted the rivalry between the two cities that has been manifested in other sports: NBA and MLS. Due to PSU's relationship with both the Timbers and Blazers it was were able to send an email to their season ticket holders offering them a $5.00 ticket to the game if they came wearing any Portland team jersey. That could include Blazers, Vikings, Timbers or even The University of Portland Pilots. The offer was extended to any fan as well. The night included "Beat Seattle" signs, Voodoo Doughnuts on sale, street drummers and Portland food carts. There was also a Brew fest for our fans 21 and over hosted by Bridgeport Brewing Company.
• Student Promotion: Green Man Group
Portland State rebranded its student group and named it the "Green Man Group." The Green Man group was a play off of the Blue Man Group as we some students had been coming to games in green full body suits. During the month of January the new student section promotion was kicked off via Social Media, cement and floor graphics around campus, dorm posters and flyers, student groups and a campus wide email. Portland media also picked up the story and helped promote the kickoff event as well, a Portland State vs. Montana State game on Jan. 26 featured. It featured free food from the Old Spaghetti Factory, free Green Man Group T-shirts for the first 300 students, and free drinks. The leaders of the Green Man group also have a timeout given to them at each game. At this particular game the group did some body surfing to the delight of the fans!
• Promotional T-Shirt Design: Get Horny T-shirt
The "Get Horny" T-shirt campaign was a play off the PSU Vikings mascot. As Vikings wear horns we wanted out students to come out to our football games, "Get Horny" and show their true horns. The play on words caused a stir on campus causing some local media to pick it up. The outcome was our largest student attendance at the Oct. 8 home football game vs. Montana State.
