PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Vikings Track Team Wins Three Events in Weekend Split

EUGENE/FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Portland State track and field team completed its final weekend of the regular season at the Oregon Relays and Pacific Twilight meets. The meets were highlighted with breakout performances by sophomore Tony Crisofulli, senior Nick Haase and wins in their respective events by Nate Lightner, Jordan Brown and the women's 4x100 relay team.

In the premiere 800-meters heat in Eugene, Crisofulli ran an outdoor PR with a time of 1:49.76 to finish second in his heat and was a mere .02 shy of stealing the Big Sky lead from Sacramento State's David Rabinowitz. The Vail, Colo., native was also .30 seconds short of the school record, but he will have a chance to break the mark, set by Brandon Lopez in 2006, at the Big Sky Championships May 12-15.

In Forest Grove, senior Nick Haase recorded a personal best of 141-11 in the discus throw to finish eighth at the meet. Haase also improved his career-best in the hammer throw with a toss of 149-9. Haase fell short of the conference qualifying marks in both events, but, exits the throwing circle with the No. 4 all-time mark in the hammer at PSU.

Lightner won the 400-meter hurdles at Pacific with his career-best time of 54.52. The time still keeps in sixth-place amongst the Big Sky's fastest times,  but it ties the freshman for the seventh-fastest time in school history with Lance Newman's mark set back in 1960.

The Tigard native, Brown, won the triple jump in Forest Grove with a jump of 44-8.75, an improvement of two inches to his season best. The senior is 3.25 inches short of the Big Sky's qualifying mark, 45 feet, but should still compete as only six athletes have met that mark. Brown also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 22-7, to meet the conference qualifying standard.

Brown's mark in the triple jump places him seventh all-time at Portland State.

Also winning this weekend was the women's 4x100 relay team at the Oregon Relays. The team, comprised of sophomores Geronne Black and Joenisha Vinson, and juniors Malissa Anthony and Karene King posted a time of 46.22 to win the event. The quartet defeated the second-place team, Wichita State, by .21 in the race.

Finally, senior Amirah Karim finished second in the long jump with a distance of 17-9.75 at Pacific. She was only two inches short of winning the event.

The Vikings will return to action May 12-15 at the Big Sky Championships in Ogden, Utah.
