NAU Knocks Out Vikings, 62-14, In Season Finale

Boxscore

Flagstaff, AZ
- Four early Viking turnovers staked Northern Arizona to a 35-0 halftime lead, and the Lumberjacks cruised to a 62-14 win from there in the season finale for both teams at Walkup Skydome.

The Portland State defense made two early stops, forcing a turnover and a three-and-out, but the offense had a succession of turnovers - including one interception and three fumbles - that set the Lumberjacks on their way. All four turnovers resulted in NAU touchdowns and the Jacks scored 35 points in a span of 13 minutes.

Making matters worse for PSU, running back Cory McCaffrey went out with a quad injury early in the game, throwing the Viking offense further out of balance.

Lumberjacks quarterback Michael Herrick had a big day completing 18 of 22 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. However, the NAU running game was explosive, scoring on touchdown runs of 75, 82 and 49 yards. The 'Jacks had 394 rushing yards and 655 yards total.

Giovannie Dixon had 219 yards and two touchdowns and Zach Bauman rushed for 152 yards and two scores.

Portland State scored twice in the second half. The first came on a fourth-down play from one senior to another. Quarterback Tygue Howland hit wide receiver Nick Hutter on a 24-yard TD pass. Late in the fourth quarter, Justin Lilley scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

The Vikings finish the year with a 2-9 record, 1-8 in the Big Sky Conference. After starting 2-2, PSU lost seven games in a row.

NAU finishes at 6-5, 4-4 in conference play.
