PORTLAND, Ore. – The only thing missing were cookies and milk in
Portland State's afternoon match against Nevada. Freshmen Amber Fenton
and Brittany Allen both scored their first career-goals against the
Wolf Pack, while senior Dolly Enneking accounted for the other that led
the Viks past the Pack, 3-0.
The Vikings and the stormy weather conditions welcomed back sophomore
Tish Parsons to the lineup at PCC – Rock Creek. At gametime, the wind
was sustained at 15 mph from the southwest, with rain beating on the
field and the participants. However, the weather did not deter the 297
fans that came to support the Vikings.
Along with Parsons, Fenton made her first season appearance and made
the most of it. Freshman Amanda Dutra went for the scoring try but
Nevada keeper Marie Cove played the ball and was not able to hang onto
it. The loose ball and Fenton skipped over Coves' left hip, as the
Bonney Lake, Wash., native put the ball in the back corner of the net
for her first score of her career in the 41st minute. It was Dutra's
second assist of the season, putting PSU up 1-0.
Nevada came out at halftime with an aggressive attack, as they
maintained the ball on their half of the pitch for the first 10
minutes. However, the Vikings defense, bolstered by the return of
Parsons, snuffed the attack and only allowed Nevada to take three shots
in the game (one shot on goal). “The backline really played well
today,” said head coach Laura Schott, “especially Toni Carnovale. She's
been playing really well in the backfield the last few games.”
Once the Vikings' defense cooled the Wolf Pack offense down, Portland
State went on the attack. In the 58th minute, senior captain Nathalie
Wollmann kicked a long ball from the right side of the midfield right
to Enneking in the front of the goalie box. Enneking settled the ball
off her body and pushed the ball into the left side of the net for the
Viks second goal of the game.
Halfway through the second half, Allen came in off the bench for senior
Kat Robertson. Allen scored in the 78th minute off an Enneking rebound
to tally the Vikings final score at 3-0.
While the game shined light on new careers against the Wolf Pack, it
also kept the lamps burning for two seniors who continue to leave their
mark on the Portland State soccer program.
Senior Cris Lewis earned her second shutout of the season and the 11th
of her career. She moves up to third all-time on the career-shutout
list. With one more shutout, she will tie Kim Street's record of 12,
set in 1998.
Enneking totaled three points today, giving her five for the season.
She now has 35 in her career, tying her for second-place on the career
points list. Joanna Bowns accumulated 42 points between 1997-99 with
the Vikings. With Enneking's two shots on goal, she moved herself into
third-place all-time with 53 shots on goal. The Tacoma, Wash., native
also moved into fourth on the career shots list with 111. She stands
firmly in third-place on the career goals list with 12.
The Vikings are now 2-2-0 on the season, while Nevada is still winless
at 0-5-0. PSU will head down to Moraga, Calif., for a matchup against
Schott's alma mater, California, Friday, Sept. 11. Match time is set
for 1:30 p.m. It will be the Vikings first of three neutral site
matches. Portland State will then take on St. Mary's Sunday at 2:30
p.m. It will also be the Vikings second matchup against both teams.
