PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Vikings' Big Plays Lead To 34-10 Win Over Southern Oregon

PORTLAND, OR - Portland State used a pair of long touchdown strikes early to take command, then rolled to a relatively easy 34-10 victory over Southern Oregon at PGE Park.

Junior quarterback Drew Hubel had a pair of 90+ yard pass plays in the Vikings first two possessions to stake PSU to a 14-0 lead. On the second play on offense for the Vikings, Hubel threw a short screen to Aaron Woods who broke through the defense and went 96 yards for a touchdown.

On Portland State's next possession, this time on the third play of the drive, Hubel hit Lavonte Kirven on a bomb that went for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Although the longest pass play in PSU history is a 99-yarder by Jimmy Blanchard to Terry Charles in 1999, it is unlikely that in Viking history there have ever been two 90+ pass plays for scores in the same game.

With a 14-0 lead at the 8:44 mark of the first period, it appeared the Vikings would blow Southern Oregon out. It didn't happen.

Although the NAIA Raiders had trouble moving the ball effectively, they controlled possession well and forced six Viking turnovers. PSU had three on special teams with two fumbles on punt returns and one on a kickoff return.

The Vikings led just 17-3 at halftime, but Hubel had two more long strikes in his arsenal. Hubel found Kirven on a 42-yard touchdown pass early in the third period, and also hit Ray Fry on a 53-yard score early in the fourth quarte to end Southern Oregon's hopes.

The other offensive highlights came from kicker/wide receiver Zach Brown. The redshirt freshman hit a 52-yard field goal in the second period and a 46-yarder in the fourth quarter. Another 42-yarder barely missed wide right.

Portland State's defense gave up just 10 points, the fewest in Head Coach Jerry Glanville's three seasons. Despite a 75-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, SOU managed just 243 yards of total offense.

The Vikings had 11 tackles for loss, three sacks and forced three turnovers on defense. PSU held Southern Oregon to 12 rushing yards on 34 carries.

Inside linebacker Ryan Rau made a team-high seven stops, with a sack and a pass breakup. The other inside backer, senior Erik Pedersen, made six stops and had three quarterback hurries. Michael Williams and Jordan Brown each had interceptions.

Portland State churned out 523 yards of offense on just 55 plays. Hubel completed 14 of 23 passes for 370 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Woods had five catches for 118 yards. Kirven had three catches for a career-high 140 yards.

Five different Vikings contributed in a running game that totaled 149 yards. Backup quarterback Connor Kavanaugh had three carries for 65 yards. Senior fullback Bobby McClintock carried six times for 50 yards.

Portland State improved to 1-1 on the season, while Southern Oregon is also 1-1.
