LOS ANGELES ? Jackie Heide broke the Portland State career home record and Portland State closed out the regular season by splitting two games at Loyola Marymount on Sunday, matching the 2006 squad for the best PCSC record in school history by finishing 15-5.
The Vikings (29-23) easily won the opener, 10-2, in six innings, tallying 14 hits off of two LMU pitchers. In the nightcap, the Lions scored four runs in the top of the first and cruised to a 9-4 victory.
Portland State earned the conference title outright by winning game one. Sacramento State, which took all four games from Santa Clara this weekend, finished at 14-6, and could have tied PSU if the Viks would have lost two today. Even in that scenario, the Viks held the tiebreaker over the Hornets, and PSU had already wrapped up the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning two yesterday.
The Viks took three of four from the Lions at Smith Field, a place that Portland State has struggled at in the past. Prior to this weekend, PSU was just 3-9 in conference games at LMU, and had never won more than two games at the Lions field in the four-game series format.
In game one, Heide blasted a grand slam in the third inning to put the Viks up, 5-0, and broke the PSU career home run mark in the process. It was Heide's 12th home run of the season and her 32nd career homer, which put her one past ex-teammate
Mandy Hill.
Heide, who went 2-for-4, finished with a career-high six RBI as she also had a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Jamee Rauch went 3-for-4 in the opener and scored a pair of runs, while
Brandi Scoggins,
De'Chauna Skinner,
Kristin Wilson and
Arielle Wiser each had two hits.
Nichole Latham worked the first five innings for PSU, scattering four hits and allowing one run to move to 16-11 on the season.
Melissa Dykema (11-14) started and pitched 3 2/3 innings for LMU. Dykema gave up six earned runs on eight hits.
The Lions had six hits, including two off the bat of senior Kirsten Slouber. The two hits gave Slouber the LMU career hits record.
After three relatively quiet games at the plate, the Lions broke loose in the fourth game of the series, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning. LMU hit three doubles in the inning, and also got a two-run home run by Megan Ackerman.
LMU finished with 15 hits, one more than they had in the first three games combined. Ackerman went 2-for-4, with Sam Fischer and Chelsie Tysdal both recording three hits.
Portland State finished with 10 hits, but couldn't string them together at the right times.
Jana Rae Slayton led the Viks, going 3-for-4, and hitting her seventh home run of the season, a solo shot that was easily 20 feet above the left field fence.
Also for PSU, Wiser had two hits and
Brandi Campos went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Vikings now will wait to find out where they will play in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The pairings for the four-team regionals will be announced on Sunday, May 9, with play set for May 15-17.
GAME NOTES: Kristin Wilson went 8-for-12 (.667) with four RBI on the weekend, and raised her average from .227 to .267. She ended the regular season on a five-game hitting streak ... PSU hit .385 as a team in the four games, while LMU hit .264 ... Latham went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA on the weekend ... The loss in the second contest snapped a season-best six-game winning streak for PSU ... Heide has a eight-game hitting streak, which ties Rauch for the longest this season.
