Ogden, UT - The Portland State Vikings were eliminated from Big Sky Conference title contention on Saturday when they lost at Weber State, 78-68.
The Vikings dropped to 8-5 in Big Sky play with three games remaining. First-place Weber State improved to 11-1. PSU now seeks a best possible finish in the Big Sky for seeding in the tournament in March. The Vikings will now need to earn their way to a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the Big Sky Tournament on the road. Weber State holds a two-game lead over second-place Montana in the tournament race and figures to host the Big Sky Tourney.
Weber State led 38-29 at halftime, but Jeremiah Dominguez brought the Vikings back with his shooting early in the second half. A pair of Dominguez three-pointers pulled PSU within 39-37, but they got no closer.
Kellen McCoy, who led Weber State (17-8 overall) with 16 points, made six free throws in the final 1:11 of the game after the Vikings had closed with 70-65.
Dominguez scored a game-high 24 points. Dominguez hit 8-15 from the field, and 6-11 from three-point range. Dominic Waters added 12 points. Kyle Coston and Julius Thomas each scored 10 for the Vikings.
PSU committed 18 turnovers to just 11 for the Wildcats. The Vikings shot .431 from the field, compared to .472 for WSU.
PSU will battle to climb into second place and earn a first-round Big Sky Tournament bye. The Vikings currently trail Montana (10-3) by two games. The good news for Portland State is it has already earned a spot in the Big Sky post-season tournament.
PSU returns home next week to host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Vikings have a ESPN BracketBusters game with Boise State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
