RISING WATERS
JR G Dominic Waters was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after averaging 23 points in three games for the Vikings last week. Waters' signature performance was a 41-point effort at Northern Arizona in the Vikings' 92-91 four-overtime victory on Sunday - the longest game in Portland State history.
Waters, a Grant High School graduate, hit 14-24 shots from the field, 6-10 from three-point range and 7-8 at the line. He scored nine points in the last 2:25 of regulation as the Vikings wiped out a 16-point halftime deficit.
Waters hit a shot with nine seconds left to give PSU its first tie of the game (the Vikings never led in regulation) and send it to overtime. Waters then brought PSU back from from the brink in the second overtime hitting back-to-back three-pointers after PSU trailed by four. Then, with 6.5 seconds left in the fourth overtime, Waters made two free throws, giving PSU a 92-91 win.
In three games, Waters averaged 23.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals. He shot .561 from the field, .550 from three-point range and .857 at the line. The Vikings also lost to 19th-ranked Baylor, 79-66, last Monday, then defeated Sacramento State, 79-67, on Friday.
Waters' 41 points against NAU were the most by a Viking since Blake Walker scored 41 in a Dec. 30, 2003 win over Tennessee State. The last time a Viking scored more than 41 points was Freeman Williams, who did so seven times during the 1977-78 season.
Waters leads the Vikings in scoring (13.3), three-point percentage (.500) and assists (43) this season despite starting just two games.
ROAD SWEET ROAD
Portland State had a very successful road swing during the past two weeks, going 4-1 while playing five games in four states over 13 days. PSU defeated seventh-ranked Gonzaga, 77-70, on Dec. 23 - arguably the biggest win in school history. PSU beat Texas Southern 63-55 on Dec. 27, then lost to 19th-ranked Baylor 79-66 on Dec. 29. Last weekend the Vikings won 79-67 at Sacramento State, then pulled off a 92-91, four-overtime thriller at Northern Arizona.

VIKING FAST BREAKS
WATERS HIGHLIGHTS THE LONGEST GAME IN PORTLAND STATE HISTORY
Behind a brilliant, 41-point game from JR G Dominic Waters, the Portland State Vikings battled back from a 16-point deficit and won the longest game in Viking history, beating Northern Arizona, 92-91, on Sunday. Portland State never led in regulation, only tieing the contest with nine seconds left on a driving shot by Waters. But, the Vikings led at the end of four overtimes, after Waters hit a pair of game-winning free throws with 6.5 seconds left... PSU had played a pair of three-overtime games in its history (1967 and 1998), but never four overtimes. And, the Vikings needed all 60 minutes of action to keep a remarkable run of winning streaks alive... the Vikings' Big Sky winning streak extends to 17, and PSU's Big Sky road winning streak is now eight. Both are school records. In addition, the Vikings have beaten the Lumberjacks five straight times... for his part, Waters' 41 points were the most by a Viking since Blake Walker scored 41 in a Dec. 30, 2003 win over Tennessee State. The last time a Viking scored more than 41 points was Freeman Williams, who did so seven times during the 1977-78 season. Waters hit 14-24 shots from the field, 6-10 from three-point range and 7-8 at the line. He scored nine points in the last 2:25 of regulation, hit the shot to send the game to overtime, brought PSU back from from the brink with back-to-back three-pointers in the second overtime, then made the winning free throws in the fourth overtime.

The Viking point guard was 7-12 from the field, 4-6 from three-point range and hit a key three-pointer with one minute remaining in the game. Perhaps just as impressive, Dominguez did not commit a single turnover at the point. He was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for his effort... in 2007-08, Dominguez led the Vikings in scoring (14.2), three-point field goals (84), assists (4.1) and steals (62), setting a new school record for three-point field goals in a season... last season, Dominguez led the Big Sky Conference in steals (1.94) and three-point field goals made per game (2.63). HE FILLS UP A BOXSCORE
JR F Julius Thomas averages just 5.7 points per game for the Vikings, but has one of the biggest impacts on the boxscore every night. Thomas scored just four points at Northern Arizona, but also had eight rebounds, two blocked shots and career-highs of six steals, five assists and 38 minutes played... Thomas has hit 34 of his last 48 field goals this season (.708), raising his shooting percentage to .623 for the season. He has also raised his season averages to career-highs of 5.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in 19.2 minutes a night off the bench... despite shooting a team-best .623 from the field this year, Thomas is actually shooting a career low. As a freshman, he shot a school-record .639 from the field. As a sophomore, he shot .715 although he did not have enough attempts to establish a new record... for his career, Thomas is 145-221 from the field (.656) and on pace to set a career record for field goal percentage. For a better perspective of his accuracy, Thomas has played in 73 games and missed just 76 shots. He has three 5-5 shooting games in his career, and two 4-4 shooting games.

He had been averaging just 4.8 points and shooting 27% in home games prior to that... Nelson was named All-Tournament at the Great Alaska Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend. He led the tournament in scoring at 18.7 points per game. He also averaged 4.3 rebounds, made a tourney-high 10 three-pointers and shot .875 at the line. He scored a season-high 24 points against Hampton.

ALSO NOTEWORTHY
