Six Portland State Viking football players have signed free agent contracts with NFL teams following last weekend's National Football League draft.
Among the six who have signed as of Monday morning are: LB Jordan Senn (Beaverton), FB Olaniyi Sobomehin (Portland), RT Daren Heerspink (Lynden, WA), C Brennen Carvalho (Kapa'a, HI), QB Brian White and DE Casey Tyler (Edmonds, WA).
Carvalho, perhaps the most decorated of the five Viking seniors, signed a contract with the Green Bay Packers. A four-year starter, Carvalho was a consensus first-team All-American each of the past two years. The 6-1, 310-pound center was a three-time All-Big Sky Conference performer as well. He was named the Rimington Award winner for the NCAA I FCS level in 2007 (best center in the nation), and competed in the Hula Bowl following the season.
Senn, an Academic All-American, honorable mention All-American and All-Conference performer from Beaverton High School, signed with the Indianapolis Colts. A 5-11, 235-pound inside linebacker, Senn had 127 tackles in 2007, more than any Viking in 30 seasons. Senn also had five tackles for loss, three interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. His 320 career tackles ranks second all-time at Portland State.
Sobomehin, who played at Cleveland High School in Portland, signed with the New Orleans Saints. He earned second team All-Big Sky Conference and honorable mention All-American honors in 2007. Sobomehin rushed 110 times for 515 yards and eight touchdowns, and had 40 receptions for 377 yards and three touchdowns in 2007. The 6-1, 230-pound senior's season was cut short by a broken wrist in the ninth game of the year.
Heerspink, from Lynden Christian High School in Washington, has signed with the Miami Dolphins. The 6-5, 310-pound tackle earned second team All-Big Sky Conference honors for the second season in a row. A starter the past two-and-a-half years, Heerspink was selected to compete in the East Coast Bowl following the 2007 season.
White, from Mission Viejo, CA, has signed with the Oakland Raiders. White started six games and played in seven this past season before a wrist injury ended his year. He completed 175 of 278 passes for 2,171 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. White was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week twice after leading the Vikings to win over Sacramento State and Eastern Washington.
Tyler, an honorable mention All-Big Sky choice from Woodway High School in Edmonds, WA, signed with the New England Patriots. A 6-6, 310-pound defensive end, Tyler started 32 games in his Portland State career. This past season, Tyler had 43 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal.
