PORTLAND, Ore. ? For the second straight season Utah Valley scored 100 points against Portland State as the Wolverines picked up a 102-92 win in overtime at the Stott Center on Monday night.
The Vikings fought back valiantly to send the game into the extra period after trailing by eight with 1:27 left. The rally was capped by a 3-pointer by Courtney Cremer with 5.1 seconds left to tie the score at 82-82. Utah Valley's Asumi Nakayama drove the length of the court but missed an off-balance layup from the right side as time expired.
In overtime, the Wolverines scored the first eight points and outscored PSU, 20-10, to escape with the win.
Portland State fell to 7-5 and lost for the first time at home this season in five games. The loss also snapped a 16-game non-conference winning streak that stretched over the past three seasons.
Utah Valley upped its record to 5-6.
The Wolverines Robyn Fairbanks led all scorers with 34 points after tallying just four points in the first half.
Kelsey Kahle led the Vikings with 30 points and tied a school record by going 12 of 12 from the free throw line. It was her sixth 30-point scoring game of her career, which also tied a school record.
PSU's comeback in the final 1:27 started with a three-point play from Kahle with 1:07 to go that made it 77-72.
After two free throws from Utah Valley's Julie McMurray put the score at 79-72, Eryn Jones hit her third 3-pointer of the second half to trim the lead to 79-75 with 56 seconds to go.
Sandy Wall then made two free throws for the Wolverines three seconds later to push the lead back to six points, before Kahle hit a jumper with 44 seconds left and Jamie Roupp followed with a jumper six seconds later to pull the Viks within two, 81-79.
Fairbanks was fouled with 15 seconds remaining, but made only one of two free throws to make it 82-79.
PSU struggled to get a shot off on the ensuing possession before Cremer hoisted a desperation 3-pointer from the top of the key that banked in.
Jones finished the game with a career-high 19 points and was 5 of 9 from beyond the arc, while Kate DePaepe also had career-highs of 15 points and nine rebounds.
Kahle added four steals for PSU, which shot just 36.7 percent for the game.
Utah Valley shot 47.9 percent and was 29 of 33 from the free throw line.
Julie McMurray added 24 points for the Wolverines, Wall had 19 and Nakayama had 11. Fairbanks also pulled down 14 rebounds.
Last season, Utah Valley defeated PSU, 104-99, in Orem, Utah.
Portland State opens up Big Sky Conference play this Friday when they host Sacramento State at 7:05 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Utah Valley now leads the overall series 3-2 ... The two teams met for the fifth straight season and this was the first time that the visiting team won on the home team's court ... Cremer had three blocks for the Viks ... PSU went 18 of 21 (85.7 percent) from the free throw line ... UVU outrebounded PSU, 49-46 ...
