Michael Plank was named assistant basketball coach in thee summer of 2014. Right away he brought a positive impact on the court and in recruiting for the Vikings.
Plank came to PSU after spending one season as an assistant coach at Casper College in Wyoming. He also worked one year as a graduate assistant at University of San Francisco (2012-13), and three years as lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Willamette (2008-12).
Plank was the head coach of the Portland Hoops Kings (South) AAU team from 2006-2008. His teams compiled a 37-8 record.
Plank was an assistant coach for the Costa Rican National Team at the Central American Games during the summer of 2015. He joined former college teammate, Josh Erickson, who is the head coach of team Costa Rica.
“I have known Mike for six or seven years and he has worked his way up through the coaching ranks,” said Geving. “What really stands out for us is Mike is from California and he has a lot of ties to that area. We need to recruit that area better and we are hoping he can help us with that. He comes from Casper College, which is in the Region 9 league, and that is another area we want to really recruit well.
“Mike has a good reputation as a recruiter and hard worker. Those were the traits we were looking for and we believe he will help improve our recruiting in those areas.”
A 2006 graduate of Willamette with a degree in Sociology, Plank played four years of basketball and football for the Bearcats. He also played one season of baseball.
