HIGHLIGHTS - DAY 3 | DAY 4
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior
Genna Settle won the first Big Sky title of her career at the 2016 Big Sky Outdoor Championships one year ago this week. Saturday, Settle won her third and fourth Big Sky titles of 2017 alone, as the senior completed a 100-200 title sweep at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium.
Â
Settle's sweep in the 100 and 200 follows a sweep of the indoor 60- and 200-meter titles at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February, giving her four Big Sky titles in one calendar year.
Â
Only Jernise Saunders had ever won four Big Sky titles in one calendar year as a Viking before Settle, when she pulled off the same double sweep of the indoor 60-, indoor 200-, outdoor 100- and outdoor 200-meter titles that Settle accomplished Saturday.
Â
Settle's sweep of the 100 and 200 Saturday ties her for the most outdoor individual Big Sky titles in program history with three, and ties her for the second-most overall individual titles with five. Additionally, Settle became the all-time leading point scorer at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships with her title sweep, as she has now scored 59 points in her career at the meet, eight more than the previous career leader, Ashley Quay (2004-07).
Â
Settle started her double Saturday with the Big Sky title in the 100 meters, winning in a seasonal best of 11.48 seconds. Settle beat out the No. 2 finisher in the 100 by .12 seconds, as Northern Arizona's Shanice McPherson, who won the Big Sky title in the women's long jump Friday, finished second in 11.60 seconds. Fellow senior
Akayla Anderson also scored for the Vikings in the finals of the 100, as she placed eighth in 12.25 seconds.
Â
Settle then returned to the track for the finals of the 200 meters less than an hour later, and won in 23.72 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off her seasonal best of 23.71 seconds. Settle beat out Northern Colorado's Moriah Zachary for the conference title, with Zachary finishing .15 seconds back of Settle in 23.87 seconds. No other runner was close to those two, as the No. 3 finisher crossed the line in 24.28 seconds, more than a half-second back of Settle.
Â
Anderson, meanwhile, scored eight points for the Viking women with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Anderson finished in 13.70 seconds – just off her seasonal best of 13.68 seconds – placing her second behind Weber State's Tawnie Moore, who finished in 13.37 seconds.
Â
Anderson's second-place finish gave her the sixth All-Big Sky honor of her career, including her fifth in either the 60- or 100-meter hurdles. In three years at Portland State, Anderson placed second or better in the Big Sky in five of the six 60- or 100-meter hurdle races in which she competed.
Â
Fellow senior
Ben Richardson earned his third All-Big Sky honor in the men's 800 meters with a third-place finish Saturday. Richardson placed third in 1:51.15, one-hundredth of a second off his personal best of 1:51.14. Southern Utah's Kasey Knevelbaard broke away from the field with 200 meters to go to win the 800 in 1:49.30, completing an 800-1500 double for the Thunderbird runner.
Â
Senior
Mitchell Gable placed fourth in the men's 400 meters while ending his Portland State career with a personal best in the event. Gable finished fourth in 47.92 seconds, more than a tenth of a second better than his old best of 48.05 seconds.
Â
Freshman
Kamal-Craig Golaube also scored for the Vikings with an eighth-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.20 seconds. The Viking men scored with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, as well, as
Christian Wood, Richardson, Donté Robinson and Gable finished in 3:18.85.
Â
The Vikings will now wait to hear who qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, May 25-27, in Austin, Texas.
