DAY 1 RECAP

POCATELLO, Idaho —
Junior Donté Robinson placed second in the heptathlon, while seniors Genna Settle and Akayla Anderson posted the top times in the prelims of the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles Friday, as the Portland State track & field team saw several individual success on the second day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships at Holt Arena.

Robinson, who stood in second at the end of the first day of the heptathlon, finished second with 5,230 points – a total that ranks him second only to former NCAA All-American Nick Trubachik, who set the school record at 5,432 points in 2010. Robinson also joined Trubachik as the only two Vikings to ever earn All-Big Sky honors in the indoor heptathlon, as no Viking had done it since Trubachik won the heptathlon in 2010.

Robinson placed second while setting a new personal best in each event Friday.

Robinson started by placing in a tie for fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.50 seconds. Robinson's time beat his overall personal best coming into the meet by over a tenth of a second, and beat his heptathlon personal best in the event by close to four-tenths of a second.

Robinson followed suit in the pole vault, clearing 13-00.25 (3.97m) to beat his overall personal best by close to three inches, as well as his heptathlon personal best by over 16 inches.

Robinson moved up to eighth all-time in the 60-meter hurdles with his time Friday, and moved up to seventh all-time in the indoor pole vault.

Robinson then closed out the heptathlon with a fourth-place finish in the 1,000 meters, as he crossed the line in 2:46.41.

Settle, meanwhile, kept the hopes of all Portland State track & field fans alive that Saturday could feature a sweep of the 60- and 200-meter titles for the Viking senior. Settle finished with the best qualifying time in the 60 meters by more than a tenth of a second, and finished only one-hundredth of a second behind the top qualifying time in the 200 meters.

Settle started her day with the prelims of the 60 meters Friday, and blew away the field while finishing in 7.51 seconds. Settle's nearest competitor finished in 7.62 seconds, and the final time qualifier was nearly a quarter of a second back at 7.75 seconds. Settle's time in the 60 Friday also represented a new seasonal best for the Viking senior – the fourth straight meet at which she has set a new seasonal best in the 60 meters – and came within one-hundredth of a second of her personal best of 7.50 seconds, which she set at the 2015 Big Sky Indoor meet.

Settle showed true domination in the prelims of the 200 meters, however, as she destroyed the other competitors in her heat while finishing in 24.13 seconds. The nearest competitor to Settle within her heat finished in 25.11 seconds – almost a full second behind Settle.

Settle won her heat so dominantly that it appeared she eased up in her final few strides to the line, which may have opened the door for Northern Colorado's Moriah Zachary to dip in under Settle with her time of 24.12 seconds in the following heat.

Regardless, Settle heads into the finals of the 60 and 200 meters having set seasonal bests in both events, raising the hopes of a possible 60-200 title sweep. Settle will first race in the finals of the 60 meters at 2:10 p.m. (MT), and then return to the track for the finals of the 200 meters 45 minutes later at 2:55 p.m. (MT).

If Settle can pull off the 60-200 title sweep, she will join Jernise Saunders as the only two Vikings to ever pull off the feat, and the first since Saunders did it in 2009.

Anderson also set herself up for possible glory Saturday, as she knocked close to two-tenths of a second off her seasonal best in the 60-meter hurdles while finishing with the top qualifying time Friday. Anderson finished the prelims in 8.41 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second off the personal best she set at the 2015 Big Sky Indoor meet.

Anderson beat out Weber State's Tawnie Moore for the top qualifying time, as Moore finished in 8.45 seconds. Moore came into the conference meet with the Big Sky lead in the 60-meter hurdles, and she and Anderson were the only two runners to finish in under 8.60 seconds Friday.

Anderson and Moore should be set for a good showdown in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, then, which will take place at 1:25 p.m. (MT).

Junior Ta'mara Richey put the Viking women on the scoreboard Friday, as she scored for the Vikings with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. Richey finished with a best mark of 19-08.25 (6.00m) in placing fourth, beating her old indoor personal best by close to 10 inches. Richey's jump also marked a new overall personal best for the Viking junior, and moved her up to third all-time in the indoor long jump at Portland State.

Richey will also compete in the triple jump Saturday, which gets underway at 10 a.m. (MT).

Seniors Ben Richardson and Mitchell Gable also qualified into the finals of their respective events for the Viking men, as well as freshman Kamal-Craig Golaube.

Richardson had to sweat out his qualification, but got through to the finals of the 800 meters on time. Richardson ran in the third heat of the 800-meter prelims Friday, but missed out on one of the top two auto bids while placing fourth. Fortunately for Richardson, he was in by far the fastest heat, and his time of 1:53.54 was one of the next two fastest to qualify for the finals.

Gable and Golaube didn't have to worry about auto bids, but still qualified for the finals in the 400 meters and 60-meter hurdles on time. Gable finished eighth overall in the prelims of the 400 with his time of 49.35 seconds. Golaube also placed eighth in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles Friday, but did so in a new personal best of 8.29 seconds. Golaube's time beat his old personal best by nine-hundredths of a second, and moved him into a tie for third all-time with new Portland State hall of fame inductee DeShawn Shead.

Golaube will be the first of the three Viking men to compete in his final Saturday, as he'll run in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at 1:15 p.m. (MT). Gable will then follow with the finals of the men's 400 meters at 1:40 p.m. (MT), while Richardson will compete in the finals of the men's 800 meters at 2:25 p.m. (MT).
