POCATELLO, Idaho — Donté Robinson stands just 58 points off the lead after day one of the heptathlon, as the junior multi-eventer opened the Big Sky Indoor Championships for the Vikings Thursday at Holt Arena.
Â
Robinson stands in second with 2,957 points, 55 points ahead of his first-day score at the Ed Jacoby Invitational/Multi, where Robinson completed his first heptathlon as a Viking.
Â
Robinson scored 4,900 points at the Ed Jacoby Invite – a mark that still ranks second in the Big Sky. Sacramento State's Max Jette was the only athlete to complete a better score in the heptathlon during the indoor regular season than Robinson, but Jette stands fourth after the first day with 2,826 points.
Â
Montana State's Mason Storm – who has not complete a full heptathlon yet this indoor season but won the decathlon at last season's Big Sky Outdoor Championships – leads the competition after the first day with 3,015 points.
Â
Robinson stands within striking distance of Storm thanks to top five finishes in the 60 meters, long jump and high jump.
Â
Robinson got off to a hot start Thursday with back-to-back personal bests in the 60 meters and long jump. Robinson finished third in the 60 meters in 7.15 seconds, a tenth of a second better than his time of 7.25 seconds at the Ed Jacoby Invite. Robinson followed with a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a personal-best jump of 21-11.50 (6.69m), six inches better than his mark at the Ed Jacoby Invite.
Â
Robinson wasn't far off his personal bests in the final two events of the day, either, as the athletes closed out the first day of the heptathlon in the shot put and high jump.
Â
Robinson placed seventh in the shot put with a best throw of 39-07.00 (12.06m), just four and a half inches off the personal best of 39-11.50 (12.18m) he set at the UW Indoor Open less than two weeks ago.
Â
Robinson placed second in the final event of the day – the high jump – as he cleared 6-05.50 (1.97m), 1.25 inches off the personal best of 6-06.75 (2.00m) he set at the Idaho Duals on Feb. 3.
Â
Robinson and the other heptathletes will resume the competition at 10 a.m. (MT) Friday with the 60-meter hurdles. The pole vault will follow after that, before the heptathlon concludes with the 1,000 meters.
Â
If Robinson can pull out a win Friday, then he'll become the Vikings' first Big Sky champion in the heptathlon since Nick Trubachik won in 2010. It'd be an appropriate day to pull off the feat, too, as Trubachik will be enshrined in the Portland State hall of fame Friday as well.
