DAY ONE RECAP
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior
Nevin Lewis claimed the decathlon title by nearly 200 points Friday, as the Portland State track and field teams competed at the second day of the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Hornet Stadium.
Lewis, who was making his decathlon debut at Portland State after a four-year football career, won the decathlon with 7,268 points, a total that ranks second all-time at the school, behind only former NCAA All-American Nick Trubachik. Lewis' total would have also given him the Big Sky lead by 600 points going into the weekend, and would have ranked him seventh in the west and 11th in the nation.
Lewis lost his 33-point first-day lead after the first event Friday, but recovered with top three finishes in the final four events of the decathlon to beat Cal Poly's Devin Bennett, who placed second with 7,069 points. Lewis initially lost the lead to Alaska Anchorage's Cody Thomas, after Thomas earned 794 points with a first-place finish in the opening 110-meter hurdles.
Lewis retook the lead with a second-place finish in the discus, however, as he threw 132-09 (40.46m) in the event. That put Lewis back in the lead by 20 points, and he extended that lead over the final three events. Lewis tied for first in the pole vault with a mark of 13-09.25 (4.20m), then followed that with a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 171-03 (52.21m). Lewis' mark in the javelin gave him a comfortable 178-point lead going into the closing 1,500 meters, and Lewis sealed the victory in the 1,500 meters with a second-place finish in 4:26.82.
Freshman
CeCelia Jackson also qualified for the Big Sky meet in the heptathlon Friday, as she placed third in the event with 4,722 points. Jackson's total ranks her sixth all-time in the event at Portland State, and would have ranked her fourth in the conference this season going into the weekend.
Jackson held the first-day lead in the heptathlon, and kept that lead through the long jump, the first event of the day, with a jump of 17-11.00 (5.46m). Jackson lost her lead after a tough mark in the javelin, however, falling to third with a throw of 57-03 (17.45m). Jackson then held steady at third after the final event, the 800 meters, as she closed the heptathlon with a time of 2:30.95.
Sophomore
Kevin Robinson and freshman
Mitchell Gable competed in their first decathlons at Portland State as well, and placed eighth and 10th, respectively. Robinson placed eighth with 5,644 points, while Gable placed 10th with 4,843 points.
Outside of the Vikings' multi-event athletes, sophomore
Sydney Johnson and senior
Shae Carson each set seasonal bests in the discus Friday. Johnson improved her Big Sky-qualifying mark in the event with a second-place throw of 147-07 (44.99m), a mark that would have ranked her seventh in the Big Sky going into the weekend. Carson, meanwhile, placed seventh in the discus Friday, with her throw of 137-09 (41.98m), two inches off her personal best of 137-11 (42.05m), set last season at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational.
Sophomore
Rockwell Tufty also won the high jump Friday, with a jump of 6-07.00 (2.01m). Tufty's jump helped the Viking men earn 16 points in the team competition Friday, putting them in third place going into Saturday. The PSU women, meanwhile, totaled 15 points Friday, placing them fifth overall.
The Mondo Mid-Major Challenge concludes Saturday, April 12, starting with the women's hammer throw at 10:30 a.m. (PT). Running events will kick off at 11:15 a.m. (PT) with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
