Jackson, Lewis Claim First-Day Leads in Heptathlon, Decathlon at Mondo Mid-Major Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Portland State mutli-event athletes CeCelia Jackson and Nevin Lewis claimed the first-day leads in the heptathlon and decathlon at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
 
Jackson set overall personal bests in all four heptathlon events Thursday, and sits in holds a 106-point lead with 3,111 points after the first day.
 
Jackson opened the heptathlon with her best individual event, as she finished the 100-meter hurdles in 13.86 seconds, earning her 998 points in the competition, and blowing away her old personal best of 14.25 seconds by nearly four-tenths of a second. Jackson's time in the 100-meter hurdles also moved her up second in the Big Sky in the event, and ranks her third all-time in the event at Portland State.
 
Jackson continued her hot start to the heptathlon with another overall personal best in the high jump, the second event of the competition, jumping 5-03.00 (1.60m) to tie her for second in the event. Jackson then closed out the first day of the heptathlon with third-place finishes in the shot put and 200 meters. Jackson threw 32-11.75 (10.05m) in her outdoor PSU debut in the shot put, and crossed the line in the 200 meters in 25.47 seconds.
 
Meanwhile, Lewis, competing in his first decathlon for the Vikings after a four-year football career, claimed the first-day lead with 3,851 points after closing the day with back-to-back first-place finishes in the high jump and 400 meters. Lewis moved into the top 10 all-time at Portland State in both the high jump and 400 meters with his performances Thursday, ranking tied for sixth in the high jump with his mark of 6-06.00 (1.98m), and eighth in the 400 with his time of 49.12 seconds.
 
Lewis opened the decathlon strong, too, as placed second in the 100 meters Thursday, crossing the line in 11.21 seconds. Lewis then followed with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 21-08.25 (6.61m), and followed that with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 42-11.50 (13.09m).
 
Lewis leads Alaska Anchorage's Cody Thomas by 33 points in the decathlon standings, and leads the No. 3 decathlete, Cal Poly's Devin Bennett by over 300 points. Additionally, both Lewis and Jackson are easily on pace after the first day to beat the Big Sky qualifying marks in the decathlon (6,200 points) and heptathlon (4,300 points), respectively.
 
Sophomore Kevin Robinson and freshman Mitchell Gable also competed in their first decathlons for the Vikings Thursday, and sit in eighth and 10th place with 3,092 and 2,545 points, respectively. Robinson had his best mark of the day come in the opening 100 meters, where he earned 685 points with his time of 11.83 seconds. Gable also had his best mark come in the 100 meters, as he placed third in the event in 11.36 seconds. Gable had been in eighth place going into the closing 400 meters, but was disqualified from the race.
 
The heptathlon and decathlon competitions conclude Friday, April 11, with the heptathlon opening with the long jump at 12 p.m. (PT) and the decathlon starting with the 110-meter hurdles at 11 a.m. (PT).
 
The rest of the Viking track and field teams will also open competition at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge Friday, with field events starting at 3:15 p.m. (PT) with the women's discus throw, and running events starting at 7 p.m. (PT) with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
