Chance Whitehurst joined the Portland State track & field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant ahead of the 2019 indoor and outdoor seasons.

Whitehurst competed for Portland State in his final year of eligibility in 2018, and broke the school record in the outdoor triple jump with a mark of 48-11.75 (14.93m) at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Whitehurst also moved up to second all time at Portland State in the indoor triple jump with a mark of 49-04.50 (15.05m) at the UW Indoor Open.

Whitehurst placed fifth in the indoor and outdoor triple jump at the Big Sky meets in 2018, scoring four points for the Vikings at each meet.

Before coming to Portland State, Whitehurst was a part of the 2014-15 University of Oregon men's track & field teamm that won the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Whitehurst also placed second in the triple jump at the Oregon state meet while at Grant High School in Portland.
