During his Presidency, there were times when the support of PSU athletics and the funding of the program were not politically popular, but his strong support for Vikings athletics never wavered. He believed PSU athletics should be highly competitive and represent the university/community in a first-class manner and develop student athletes who could make positive contributions to society. His insight into the selection of highly successful coaches and his support of their endeavors are what made the PSU programs nationally recognized.
With his leadership, PSU produced national champions, championship contenders, and competitive men’s and women’s athletic teams. All of this was accomplished with little, if any, financial support from the State of Oregon.
