PORTLAND, Ore. — Former Dallas Baptist runner Matt Hahn has joined the Portland State cross country and track & field program as an assistant coach, head coach
Jonathan Marcus announced Thursday.
Â
Hahn ran for the Dallas Baptist cross country and track & field programs from 2016-21, captaining the team for three years. In cross country, Hahn was a two-time all-conference honoree within the Lone Star Conference. He also earned all-conference honors during the 2021 indoor season with a third-place finish in the 3k at the conference meet.
Â
"Matt has an energy and passion for the sport which is second to none," Marcus said of Hahn. "He's a hard worker and quick learner who always puts the well-being of student-athletes first. I'm excited to work alongside him developing amazing student-athletes on the Park Blocks. We're lucky to have him on the staff."
Â
Hahn kickstarted his young coaching career as a cross country and track & field coach for the Kingdom Collegiate Academies. Hahn coached athletes to three individual state titles and five podium finishes in his one year at Kingdom Collegiate Academies.
Â
Hahn also coached the overall winner of the 2023 Humpy's Marathon, Sam Vincent. Vincent set a course record of 2:40.59 in winning the event, more than 11 minutes ahead of the No. 2 finisher in the race.
Â
Additionally, as team captain at Dallas Baptist, Hahn created and led a high-altitude summer training opportunity for his teammates over the summer of 2019.
Â
"I just want to thank Jonathan for giving me the opportunity to work alongside himself and Coach Wagenaar," Hahn said. "I am very excited at the direction and potential that this program has, and I am eager to play my role in aiding the student-athletes in their preparation and development. Not only as athletes, but also as leaders and servants in the world."
Â
Hahn becomes the third new member of the Vikings' coaching staff, joining Marcus and
Megan Wagenaar. The Vikings are two meets into their 2023 cross country season. They'll compete again Friday at the Mike Johnson Classic in Monmouth, Ore.
