PORTLAND, Ore. — ChaQuinn Cook's dream freshman season extends to the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships this weekend at Veteran's Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif., as she competes in the triple jump at 5:30 p.m. (PT) Sunday.
Â
Cook qualified for the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships on the back of her Big Sky title-winning jump of 41-02.50 (12.56m) at the Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo., on May 14. That jump put her over the 12.40m needed to qualify for the meet, and she nearly matched it again at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, where she finished with a mark of 41-02.25 (12.55m).
Â
Cook will compete this weekend with a chance to qualify for the IAAF U20 Championships, previously named the IAAF World Junior Championships. Cook will need to finish in the top two at the USATF meet, and meet the IAAF qualifying standard of 13.00 meters during the competition to qualify for the world meet. Cook enters the USATF meet with the seventh-best qualifying mark in the triple jump field, behind athletes from Georgia Tech, Texas, Kansas and Ohio State.
Â
Cook also won the Big Sky indoor title in the triple jump this season, making her the first Portland State freshman ever to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles in the triple jump in the same season. Additionally, Cook became just the second Viking to ever win the Big Sky title in the outdoor triple jump, and the first since Gayle Imran-Sideris in 2005.
