LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Portland State men's tennis team wrapped up its three-match trip to Las Vegas with a 5-2 loss to Seattle Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center.
Â
Senior
Stuart Tierney led the Vikings again with wins in singles and doubles Wednesday, but it wasn't enough for the Vikings (5-10) to pull out the dual as a team. The Redhawks (5-12) won the doubles point over the Vikings with wins in two of the three doubles matches, and followed it up with wins in four of the six singles matches.
Â
Tierney and doubles partner
Ian Risenhoover gave the Vikings hope in doubles, as they wrapped up a 6-4 win over Seattle's Riley Newman and Ian Clare at line one. The Redhawks came back with wins at lines two and three in doubles to secure the doubles point, however, but Tierney returned with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Newman to lead the Vikings in singles at line one.
Â
Tierney was making his return to line one in singles in his match against Newman after he had played his last four matches at line two. Additionally, Tierney's win marks his third straight singles win for the Vikings, as well as his eighth win in his last 10 matches.
Â
Tierney leads the Vikings with an 8-5 overall record during the dual season, which would rank as the third-best single-season record in terms of win percentage in Portland State history if the season ended today.
Â
Sophomore
Ethan Lopez would also finish in a tie for the fourth-best single-season win percentage if the season ended today, as he upped his overall record to 8-7 with
a comeback win at line two. Lopez lost a tough first set in a tiebreaker to Seattle's John Stormans, but then dominated the rest of the way. Lopez beat Stormans 6-3 in the second set to level the match at a set all, and then cruised to a 10-1 win in the match tiebreaker to wrap up a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1) win.
Â
Risenhoover, meanwhile, nearly completed his own comeback win at line six, but lost an extremely close match tiebreaker to Seattle's Matt Alderson. Alderson won the first set off Risenhoover, 6-4, but Risenhoover came back and won the second set by the same score. The two then went back and forth in the match tiebreaker before Alderson pulled it out at the end, 10-8.
Â
The Vikings will now take a nine-day break from competition before returning home for a match against Eastern Washington on April 3. The Vikings will host the Eagles at 2 p.m. (PT) at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. on April 3, which will be the Vikings' first home match in nearly six weeks.
