OGDEN, Utah —
Defending Big Sky regular-season champion Weber State swept past the Portland State men's tennis team Saturday, winning 7-0 at Ogden Athletic Club.

The Wildcats (8-8, 3-1 Big Sky), who went a perfect 10-0 in Big Sky play last season, won all three doubles and all six singles matches against the Vikings (5-7, 2-5 Big Sky), who played without junior Brent Wheeler, a regular fixture in the Vikings' lineup throughout the season.

The Wildcats swept the Vikings in doubles, winning 6-2 at lines two and three, and 6-4 at line one.

The Wildcats then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, though the Vikings put up fights at lines one and five. Sophomore Ethan Lopez took Weber State's Jakub Gewert deep into the first set of their match at line one, but Gewert rose to the occasion late, winning the set 7-5 en route to a 7-5, 6-1 win.

Meanwhile, junior Ian Risenhoover, who took a four-match win streak into the Vikings' match against the Wildcats, played an extremely tight match against Weber State's Sanjay Goswami at line five. Goswami squeaked past Risenhoover, 6-4, in the first set, but Risenhoover matched him with a 6-4 win in the second set to level the match at a set all. The players then went into a match tiebreaker, where Goswami barely pulled out a 10-8 win to claim the match and complete the sweep for the Wildcats.

The Vikings will now step out of Big Sky play for the next couple of weeks, as they won't play another conference foe until April 3, when they host Eastern Washington at 2 p.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

The Vikings will next compete in Las Vegas, Nev., where they'll face Scottsdale Community College, Grand Canyon and Seattle on March 23, March 24 and March 25, respectively.
