VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Portland State men's tennis team picked up their first win of the 2015 dual season Saturday, as a team effort led the Vikings to a 5-2 win over Lewis-Clark State at Club Green Meadows.
Â
All six active players for the Vikings (1-1) won in either singles or doubles Saturday, while the Vikings won three singles matches in straight sets.
Â
"It was a great team effort today," PSU head coach
Toby Krauel said. "Our guys that struggled in doubles picked us up in singles.
Â
"The Medford boys [juniors
Matt Pronesti and
Wil Cochrane] led the way by sealing the doubles point for us, and rolling in their two singles matches, while
Ethan Lopez played lights out at No. 2 singles."
Â
The Vikings started the match off with a lead, as they took two of their three doubles matches against the Warriors (1-1) to claim the doubles point. Senior
Stuart Tierney and junior
Ian Risenhoover cruised to a 6-3 win over Lewis-Clark State's Yonas Woldetsadik and Jeff Su at No. 1 doubles, putting the Vikings one win away from securing the doubles point.
Â
Cochrane and Pronesti then followed with a break at 6-5 at No. 2 doubles, giving them a 7-5 win over Lewis-Clark State's Tony Chin and Sonam Phuntsok, and clinching the doubles point for the Vikings.
Â
Lopez, Cochrane and Pronesti, meanwhile, all followed it up with straight-set wins in singles, securing the dual-match win for the Vikings. Lopez, Cochrane and Pronesti lost only seven games combined Saturday, while none of the three players lost more than two games in any set.
Â
Lopez and Cochrane each won their singles matches, 6-1, 6-1, with Lopez beating Su at No. 2 singles, while Cochrane beat Phuntsok at No. 4 singles. Pronesti, meanwhile, beat Lewis-Clark State's Anthony Croteau 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Â
Besides them, junior
Brent Wheeler also won his singles match Saturday, as he rallied after dropping a tough second set to beat Lewis-Clark State's Andres Bustani in a match tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Wheeler took the first set off Bustani, 6-2, but then saw Bustani break him late in the second set to level the match with a 7-5 second-set win. Wheeler bounced back well in the match tiebreaker, however, beating Bustani 10-5 in the breaker to take the match 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5).
Â
Wheeler's win put the finishing touches on the Vikings' 5-2 win, while the Warriors claimed wins at No. 1 and 6 singles.
Â
The Vikings will hope to keep their momentum going into their next match, as the Vikings open Big Sky play by hosting Idaho Friday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
