STANFORD, Calif. — Senior
Brent Wheeler won in the consolation singles and doubles draws Sunday to lead the Portland State men's tennis team on its final day at the ITA Northwest Regional at the Taube Tennis Center.

Wheeler won his round of 32 singles match in a super tiebreaker to beat Wacil Bendjelti of Big Sky-rival Eastern Washington Sunday. Wheeler cruised through the first set against Bendjelti, winning 6-1, but then lost a close second set, 7-5, to move the match into the super tiebreaker. Wheeler rallied to win the super tiebreaker 10-3, however, giving him the match 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (3).

Wheeler and junior
Ian Risenhoover also rallied to win their doubles match in the consolation draw Sunday, as they came back to beat Ashwin Sharma and Eric Spence from the University of the Pacific. Wheeler and Risenhoover fell behind 5-1 to Sharma and Spence in the match, but won the final seven games to take the match, 8-5.

Stuart Tierney and junior
Matt Pronesti, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw Sunday, after their round of 16 opponents withdrew due to injury. Tierney and Pronesti's run ended in the quarterfinals later in the day Sunday, however, as they faced one of the tournament's highest seeded teams in Andre Goransson and Oskar Wikberg of the University of the California, and lost 8-0.

The Vikings will play at the Gonzaga Fall Tournament next weekend, with play opening Friday, Oct. 24, and ending Sunday, Oct. 26.
