The Portland State Vikings will try to end a four-game slide this Saturday when it hosts Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference football game at JELD-WEN Field. The Vikings go into Saturday's game at 1-4 on the season, 0-2 in the Big Sky. Idaho State stands at 1-3, 0-1. The Bengals have lost two in a row, 10 of 11, and some 35 straight road games dating back to 2006.
Saturday's game is a 5:07 p.m. contest. It will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. It also airs on Freedom 970 AM and www.freedom970.com. The pregame radio show begins at 4 p.m.
Portland State is on its longest losing streak since dropping the last seven games of the 2010 season. And, a 2012 campaign that showed great promise has been slowed by injury and inconsistent play to this point. A win against the Bengals would salve those wounds and be welcome as the Vikings don't return home again until November. PSU has won two straight against Idaho State, and has won six straight home games over ISU.
An offense that had been very effective through four games lost its way in a 24-10 loss at Northern Arizona last Saturday. The Vikings managed just 271 yards after entering the game with a total offense average of 431 yards and 32.5 points per game.
Still, PSU will have a host of offensive weapons to go to on Saturday. The Vikings have scored 34 or more points in the last four meetings with Idaho State, three of which have been wins.
The Bengals come off a big 54-31 home loss to Sacramento State in their first conference game of the year. It marked their third loss in four games and third time they have given up 49 points or more. In that game, ISU quarterback passed 73 times, completing 44 for 534 yards and two interceptions.
Idaho State ranks last in the Big Sky in rushing defense and scoring defense. Expect a high-scoring affair when the two teams meet.
LAST YEAR: PORTLAND STATE 42, IDAHO STATE 35
Portland State's 42-35 win at Idaho State last season broke a streak of 11 straight years of the home team winning each game of the series. It marked the Vikings' first win in Pocatello since 1999. The Vikings set a school record with 436 rushing yards in the victory. Quarterback
Connor Kavanaugh rushed for 212 yards and four touchdowns, earning Big Sky and National Player of the Week honors.
Cory McCaffrey rushed for 218 yards and two scores.
NEW HALL OF FAME MEMBERS TO BE HONORED
Portland State Athletics will recognize six new Hall of Fame inductees at halftime of the football game. Representing the outstanding history of PSU Athletics are the 1962 NAIA National runner up Viking Baseball team, career-hitting leader Jim Dunn, PSU's first-ever Big Sky Basketball Player of the Year Seamus Boxley, second all-time leading rusher Ryan Fuqua, 2005 Big Sky Golfer of the Year and three-time team champion Sarah Tiller, and PSU's all-time winningest football coach Tim Walsh.
The Hall of Fame ceremony takes place at a Friday night banquet.
Seamus Boxley, Men's Basketball, 2001-05
Boxley had a solid all-around career, earning Big Sky Freshman of the Year honors in 2000-01, and finishing it as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year in 2004-05. He was also named the Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04 and 2004-05. Boxley led PSU to its first Big Sky Basketball Championship in 2004-05, averaging 20.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Boxley ranks fourth all-time in scoring (1,498), third in rebounding (748), second in blocked shots (128), third in field goal percentage (.560) and third in games played (114) in PSU history. Boxley also led the Big Sky in rebounding as a junior (9.4). Named first team All-Big Sky Conference twice, Boxley also was a five-time Big Sky Player of the Week.
Jim Dunn, Baseball, 1977-79
A second baseman and pitcher, Dunn played three seasons at Portland State before signing a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants. Dunn finished his PSU career as the all-time hitting leader with a .385 batting average. In 1978, Dunn was 10-1 as a pitcher with a 2.10 ERA, completing nine of 11 starts and earned All-NorPac honors. He was 18-5 with a 2.53 ERA in three seasons on the mound. Dunn batted .363 and stole a school-record 26 bases in 1979, once again earning All-NorPac honors. He won his team's Outstanding Pitcher Award in 1978 and Gold Glove Award in 1979.
Ryan Fuqua, Football, 2001-04
Fuqua was a four-year starter for the Vikings who rushed for 1,000+ yards in three of his four seasons. As a freshman, he had 1,586 yards to rank fifth in the nation, and led the nation with 7.6 yards per carry. Fuqua set a school record with 393 rushing yards in a game against Eastern Washington that season, was named Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and earned third team All-American honors from the Associated Press. Following that, he was a second team All-Big Sky choice in 2002, and a two-time honorable mention All-BSC choice. Fuqua finished his career second all-time in rushing (4,730 yards) and fourth all-time in touchdowns (47) at PSU. He led the Big Sky in rushing twice and all-purpose yards once. Fuqua had 21 100-yard games and six 200-yard games during his career. Fuqua was a three-time Big Sky Player of the Week and three-time National Player of the Week.
Sarah Tiller, Women's Golf, 2001-05
Tiller was a member of three Big Sky Conference Champion teams (2003, 2004, 2005) and competed in three NCAA Regional Tournaments. In 2005 she was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Year. Tiller was a three-time All-Big Sky player and earned Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors five times during her senior season. She also set new school records for 54-hole scoring (213) and season scoring average (77.0), twice posting the (then-)school record for single round scoring (69) as a senior. At the conclusion of her senior year, Tiller was selected as Portland State's Female Athlete of the Year. Tiller is the all-time leader in rounds played at Portland State (120), led the team in scoring in 14 tournaments during her career, and still ranks in the top 10 in career (78.65) and season scoring average.
Tim Walsh, Football Coach, 1993-2006
Walsh was the longest tenured and winningest football coach in Portland State history, coaching 14 seasons and compiling a 90-68 record. This despite having to lead PSU through the hard knocks of moving from Division II to Division I in the 90s. Walsh coached four NCAA playoff teams (1993, 1994, 1995 and 2000), including leading the Vikings to the Division I playoffs in just their fifth year at the higher level. For that effort, he was an Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year finalist in 2000. Walsh's teams had 10 winning seasons and he is one of just three PSU football coaches with career winning records. Walsh also led PSU to its only two wins over FBS level programs (Hawai'i 45-20, in 2000 and New Mexico, 17-6, in 2006).
1962 Viking Baseball Team
The 1962 Portland State baseball team competed at the NAIA level, winning the Oregon Collegiate Conference Championship, then the NAIA District II title. The Vikings advanced to the national Championship in St. Joseph, MO, finishing second in the nation. The Vikings lost to Georgia Southern, 2-0, in the title game. PSU was 25-12 on the season, 12-0 in the OCC under Head Coach Roy Love. Pitcher Gordon Riese was named second team NAIA All-American, while Dennis Heath (SS), Bob Stamsos © and Ted Hendry ? were honorable mention All-Americans. Riese, Heath, Stamsos, Hendry, Don Lowry and Bob Jones were named OCC All-Conference. NAIA District 2 first team included Hendry, Stamsos, Heath, Jones and Lowry.
