SEATTLE – Behind the power of two home runs and the pitching of Jessica Simpson, Miami (OH) tallied a 4-1 victory over Portland State on Friday at the Husky Softball Classic.
Already up 1-0, the Redhawks (7-8) got a solo home run from Daniela Torres in the second and a two-run shot from Alicia Hogl in the fourth, and then watched Simpson do the rest. In a complete-game effort, the righty held Portland State to four hits while striking out nine and evened her record at 5-5.
Portland State got on the board in their half of the fourth when
Lacey Holm brought in
Arielle Wiser with a bloop single to right field. Wiser had led off the inning with a double to left centerfield that nearly cleared the fence, then advanced a base on a groundout by
Danielle Lynn.
Tori Rogers (2-5) suffered the loss for the Vikings, giving up four runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings.
A bright spot for the Vikings was the pitching of
Nichole Latham. The reigning PCSC Pitcher of the Year has struggled early this season, but had her best performance on Friday, pitching 3 2/3 innings of hitless rellief.
Portland State (6-12) plays the Redhawks again tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., before facing top-ranked Washington at 3:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on GoViks.com.
NOTES: Brandi Campos and
Alexa Morales had PSU's other two hits ...
