PORTLAND, Ore. – Nique Fradella tied a 17-year old school record with nine service aces and Portland State rolled to a sweep of Boise State on Saturday afternoon at the Northwest Classic. Set scores were 25-17, 25-12, 25-16.
Behind stellar serving and another great hitting performance, Portland State won its second match in a row to move to 2-3 on the season.
Fradella's nine aces matched PSU's three-set record set in 1992 by Joy Russell against Lewis & Clark. She added a match-high 34 assists and also had five digs.
The Vikings racked up 16 service aces in all, one short of the school three-set record.
In the second set, Fradella served seven-straight points to bring Portland State back from a 13-10 deficit. With the Vikings down by one, 13-12, Fradella went on her roll. After a kill by
Whitney Phillips, Fradella recorded three-straight aces and then later added another ace to give PSU a 18-13 lead.
For the second-straight match the Vikings hit well. After hitting .360 in a 3-1 win over Gonzaga last night, they came back and registered a .310 attack percentage against Boise State.
Whitney Phillips paced the Viks with 11 kills,
Jennifer Oney added eight more and
Nicole Bateham led all players will 11 digs.
The Broncos managed just a .157 attack percentage and fell to 0-5 on the year.
Boise State takes on Gonzaga at 5 p.m. tonight, before Portland State and #3 Washington close out the Northwest Challenge at 7:30 p.m.
