PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS

Phillips Puts On A Show In Vikings' Sweep Of Eastern Washington

PORTLAND, Ore. – It was a one-person show on Friday night inside the Peter W. Stott Center, as Whitney Phillips pounded out 25 kills and hit .477 to lead Portland State to a straight-sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-22) win over Eastern Washington in a clash of Big Sky Conference volleyball powers.

In front of a season-high 917 fans, the Vikings rode the arm of Phillips to their third straight win over Eastern Washington and their sixth straight win overall.

"I thought Whitney was absolutely outstanding tonight," said Portland State head coach Michael Seemann. "If you look at the last couple of weeks and how we've been winning, it's been with our middles (blockers) doing a lot of work for us. I think they attracted some attention tonight, which opened up things for Whitney.

"It's kind of funny because she had an off-day in practice yesterday, but then she comes out here tonight and had a great performance. I'm really proud of the way she played."

Phillips had two attack errors on 14 attempts in the first set, but tallied just two more errors on 30 swings the rest of the way. It was the eighth time this season she has gone over the 20-kill mark. She fell just shy of a double-double, as she registered nine digs.

The Vikings never trailed in the opening frame, running out to a 10-4 lead. The Eagles rallied to get within a point, 12-11, before Portland State went on the attack again. Back-to-back kills from Christie Hamilton and Erica Jepsen, and a hitting error by the Eagles put PSU up by four. They extended their lead to set point, 24-20, only to watch Eastern Washington rally again. The Eagles scored four straight to tie it, but the Viks finished them off on a kill by Phillips and an another EWU attack error.

Eastern Washington came out of the three-minute break on fire, scoring the first two points and eventually leading 5-2. It was pretty much all Portland State from there, though.

Phillips rattled off two straight kills, Hayley Hills answered back for Eastern Washington, and then Phillips picked up two more kills to tie it up at 6-6. With the score knotted at 10-10, the Vikings scored the next six points to essentially put the set away.

In the final set, Eastern Washington again opened with the momentum, scoring the first three points. The Viks got back in it, though, behind three kills from Phillips and tied it at 4-4. With the score tied at 14-14, the Vikings went on an eight-point run to pull away and secure the sweep.

The win keeps Portland State (17-7) in a tie for first place in the Big Sky with Northern Colorado at 11-2. Those two teams meet up next Saturday in Portland.

Phillips did get help from her teammates. Setter Nique Fradella finished with 40 assists and 10 digs for her sixth double-double, while Lana Zielke had a match-high six blocks. Nicole Bateham led PSU with 11 digs and Marija Vojnovic added 10 more.

Hills, the reigning Big Sky Player of the Year, paced the Eagles with 12 kills, but hit just .088. Also for Eastern Washington (15-9, 9-4 BSC), JaNae Mortensen recorded 16 digs, and Chenoa Coviare had five blocks.

Longtime Portland State coach Jeff Mozzochi was honored between sets two and three. A head coach for the Vikings for 16 years (1984-92; 2001-06), Mozzochi has been the associate head coach the past three seasons and will be stepping away from the sidelines following this season. He will be moving into an administrative role in the athletic department. Several former players joined him on the floor during the presentation, including Leanne Lewis, who is the former Leanne Peters (1990-93). She is one of just two players to have their jersey retired at Portland State.
