The Portland State men's tennis swept through the weekend with a pair of 7-0 victories over DII Colorado Christian Cougars and Big Sky Conference rival the Northern Colorado Bears. The two wins mark Portland State's first sweeps of the season.
The Vikings win over the Bears marks the programs first victory over a Big Sky opponent in over five years. Portland State is now 4-8 on the season, with a 1-4 records against conference opponents.
“We played at a high energy level throughout the duration of the contest,” said head coach Steve Ascher. “To sweep a Division I team, everyone played with sustained concentration and determination. This was a great win for our team.”
Freshman Alex VanDerschelden led the way for Portland State as he went 4-0 on the weekend, winning both of his singles and doubles matches. Both of his singles matches at the no. 1 position. He is now 4-8 on the season and has a 2-4 conference record. VanDerschelden defeated the Cougars' Clint Walder, 6-3, 7-5, and Northern Colorado's Vinnie Fallico 6-2, 7-5. VanDerschelden also teamed up with Jeff Cero to win both of his doubles matches. The VanDerschelden/Cero duo is now 5-5 on the season.
Junior Alex Hart and freshman Sean Eberle also won both of their singles matches and have a team-high five wins this season. Eberle won both of his matches at the no. 3 spot, while Hart defeated his opponents at the no. 6 position.
The Portland State men's tennis program will be back in action at home this weekend as they compete against a trio of non-conference opponents. The Vikings first match will be against UC-Riverside on Thursday, 9:00 a.m. at the University of Portland.
