WRESTLING, CLASS OF 1954
If there ever was a wrestling pioneer at Portland State, Wilbur “Willie” Bauer would be that man. An original Viking, Bauer is one of the few ex-Viks to have also wrestled for Vanport College. While at Vanport, Bauer was informally coached by Don Whitbeck.
His college career was interrupted by the Korean War draft and after spending two years competing on the All-Army wrestling squad, Bauer returned home to the compete at what would become Portland State College. Bauer went on to become a three-time Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Association champion on Howard “Doc” Westcott’s first team.
