MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 1953-1965, 1975-76
The winningest men's basketball coach in Portland State history, Sharkey Nelson roamed the sidelines from 1953 until 1965 and returned for a brief stint as women’s basketball coach for the 1975-76 season. Nelson recorded two 20-win seasons and he led the 1955-56 squad to a then-record 21 wins. In 12 seasons with the men, Nelson won three Oregon Collegiate Conference titles, twice led the Vikings to the NAIA playoffs and compiled a career record of 162-156. Nelson led the Viking women to a 19-13 mark and a trip to the AIAW National Tournament, the first trip to a national tournament by a PSU women’s basketball team.
