HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, 1986-92
Pokey Allen brought unique and quirky style to his tenure as the Viking Football Head Coach from 1986-1992. He also brought tremendous success. In addition to riding elephants, being shot out of a cannon, and betting his paycheck to sell tickets to Viking football games, he produced some of PSU’s most exciting football ever. Allen’s antics attracted local, regional and national attention to the program and university.

In his seven seasons, Allen had a 68-26 career record – at the time, the most wins ever by a Viking football coach, and still the best winning percentage (.723) – had five playoff teams, and twice led Portland State to the NCAA II National Championship game (1987, 1988). PSU dominated the Western Football Conference, compiling a 30-7 record during that span, mounting a 15-game winning streak and capturing five league championships. Allen was named WFC Coach of the Year five times (1987, 1988, 1989, 1991 and 1992) and twice named Region Coach of the Year (1987, 1988). He coached nine first team All-Americans.
