FOOTBALL, 1977-1980
As well as being a record-breaking quarterback, Neil Lomax has the distinction of being perhaps the most recognizable athlete in Portland State history. As the engineer of Mouse Davis’s Run-and-Shoot offense, Lomax excelled, leading the Vikings to the top of the nation’s statistical charts in passing and total offense for four seasons, and scoring for three seasons. Lomax was a first team All-American in 1980 when he passed for a then-record 4,094 yards. He finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting despite playing at the NCAA Division I-AA level. Lomax was the Most Valuable Player of the Senior Bowl and the College Football Roundup Player of the Year. Lomax finished his career with eye-popping numbers and school records of 13,220 passing yards, 13,345 yards of total offense, 106 touchdown passes, 938 completions, 28 300-yard passing games and 10 400-yard passing games.

Lomax was named the state of Oregon Athlete of the Year in 1979 and 1980. He went on to a distinguished career in the NFL with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. In 1993, Lomax was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, followed by the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
