MERITORIOUS SERVICE, 1957-92
HEAD BASEBALL COACH, 1957-61
Mike Tichy was the head baseball coach from 1957-61. He developed PSU’s program into district champions with local players, no scholarships, no paid assistant coaches, and no home practice facilities.
Among his players were three-time All-American Gordon Riese, major league umpire Ted Hendry, ex-PSU Athletic Director Roy Love, and State Representative Ron Adams. During his 35 years as professor of Health and Physical Education, he became a nationally renowned authority on fitness by developing programs for cardiovascular rehabilitation.
While teaching, writing, lecturing and helping others become more physically fit, he was a goodwill ambassador for the athletic program, gaining community support from many community leaders. Tichy also coached basketball and tennis at the collegiate level.
