WOMEN’S BASKETBALL/SOFTBALL, 1988-1991
A two-sport star at Portland State, it is difficult to say where Michele “Pee Wee” Hughes contributed more: as shortstop on the softball team or point guard on the basketball team. One thing is certain though, both teams enjoyed some of their greatest success during her career.

In basketball, Hughes was a dangerous three-point shooter, hitting 256 from long range in her career – still a record at PSU. Hughes finished her career as the sixth all-time leading scorer in school history (1,237 points). The team enjoyed its best record to that point as a Division I program during her senior year (19-8).

In softball, Hughes ranked in the top-ten in virtually every major statistical category. She earned All-West Region and All-American honors in 1990, playing both shortstop and catcher. In 1991, the Vikings finished third in the nation and the combined team record (84-23) of those two years still stands as the best successive seasons in PSU history. Amazingly, Hughes also started every game of her PSU career in both sports.
