John Nelson was a high-scoring forward while playing for his father, Sharkey, in the early 1960s. In an era when the Vikings were scoring in the low 60s, Nelson was a scoring prodigy. He poured in 2,123 points during his Portland State career and ranks second in school history. Playing in 101 career games, Nelson averaged over 21 points per game. He led the Vikings in scoring all four seasons and was named team Most Valuable Player each year. Nelson also ranks seventh all-time in rebounding at Portland State with 643. During his senior year, Nelson averaged a career-high 25.8 points for new Head Coach Marion Pericin. He was given the team's Morris Rogoway Award three times for scholarship, personal achievement, and ability.
