Dr. Joe Holland was the founder of the Portland State Athletics program. Beginning at Vanport in 1946 as the Director of Athletics, coach of three sports and chairman of the health and physical education program, Joe Holland was the Athletic Department. For 18 years he administered the fledgling program through floods, location changes and competitive level changes. Without his tenacity and vision, there might not have been an athletic program. Holland was director of athletics (1946-64), football coach (1947-54), basketball coach (1946-48) and baseball coach (1946-48).

Dr. Holland hired coaches who impacted PSU athletic programs from the 1940’s through the 1980’s. He administered the program in the Oregon Collegiate Conference and District II of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. During his tenure, the Vikings grew to prominence in OCC/NAIA sports such as football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, golf, and tennis.

Dr. Holland was also responsible for the design and building of the original Health and Physical Education facility (The Peter W. Stott Center).
