HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH, 1986-1996
Coaching the Vikings at both the Division I and Division II levels, Greg Bruce led the most successful era of women’s basketball in Portland State history. Bruce led the Vikings program to its first-ever winning season as a Division I program in 1988-89 and proceeded to have eight winning seasons in a row.
After going 19-8 in 1990-91, the PSU program was required by the NCAA to move to the Division II level of competition. That led to even more success as the Vikings went 31-3 the following year and reached the Division II Final Four. In the five years of Division II competition, Portland State won five Pacific West Conference Championships and made five NCAA Div. II playoff appearances, compiling a 129-25 record.
The Vikings placed third in the nation in 1992 and runner-up in 1995. Bruce was named Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year four times and District VIII Coach of the Year three times. His 199-89 record over 10 years stands as the best in PSU women’s basketball history.
