SOFTBALL, 1980-83
A first-team All-American for the Portland State softball team in 1981 and 1982, Deb Fitzhugh established virtually every Viking pitching record in the book. In an era of softball “small ball”, Fitzhugh was among the stingiest of pitchers. She set Portland State records for career ERA (0.44), strikeouts (549), no-hitters in a season (4) and a career (6). Fitzhugh had a school-record 250 strikeouts in 1982, tossing 21 in a 21-inning playoff game. She was the leading pitcher on three NCAA Division II playoff teams that finished fourth, seventh and fourth in the nation. Fitzhugh went on to play semi-professionally in New Zealand.
