FOOTBALL, 1987 AND 1988
The Division II era of Portland State Football peaked during the 1987 and 1988 seasons, when the Pokey Allen-led Vikings reached the NCAA II National Championship game each season. The Vikings were a combined 22-5-2 those two seasons and had perfect 6-0 records in the Western Football Conference. The Vikings’ matching 11-win seasons rank as the most wins ever at PSU and came in back-to-back seasons. Moreover, the Vikings captured the attention of the city of Portland in the media and in the stands. PSU drew over 10,000 fans to games on eight occasions, and 21,000 to a national semifinal win over Texas A&I in 1988. Portland State averaged over 10,000 fans in a season for the first time in 1988. Those Viking teams were dominant offensively and defensively, earning a total of 20 first-team All-WFC honors, as well as Coach of the Year twice (Pokey Allen), and Offensive (Chris Crawford, 1987; Curtis Delgardo, 1988) and Defensive Players of the Year (Tracey Eaton, 1987; Kevin Wolfolk, 1988) both seasons.
