1981 VIKING VOLLEYBALL TEAM
Led by Head Coach Marlene Piper, the 1981 Viking team nearly won the AIAW National Championship. Prior to the NCAA sponsoring women's sports, the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women was the national governing body, with one level of competition. The Vikings, who went 46-11-1, were a perfect 12-0 in the Mountain West Conference and won the AIAW Regional. At the national championship tournament in Tallahassee, FL, the Vikings went all the way to the title game against Texas, losing a thriller in five games, including 16-14 in the final frame. The 1981 Vikings featured first team AIAW All-American Kristi Bowden.
